Set out... in search of knowledge, techniques and people belonging to the world of stone. This is what the Stone Route expedition has set out to do. As an answer to understand a thousand-year-old profession, disrupted by many current problems, a testimony of knowledge and know-how, both ancient and modern, a way to share this knowledge and to make a large number of men and women aware of the subject. As an element and material, stone alone combines ecological, human, cultural and technical values.

The Route de la Pierre was born from the initiative of two stonemasons, Louis Dutrieux and Orianne Pieragnolo. Five years ago, after discussions and meetings about their profession, they created a project to respond, in their own way, to the problems of their profession. As vehicles of a rich culture and bearers of many current ecological, environmental, technological and human values, the stone trades can be part of the innovative solutions of tomorrow. The Stone Route therefore aims to be a support and a vector for the development of this knowledge and these professions, which could have a positive impact on our societies in the long term.

The Stone Route is an expedition with scientific, technical and social aims. Its objectives include the study and practice of the different aspects of stonemasonry in Eurasia with the aim of transmitting a current and global representation. The diagram of our study therefore presents the four main themes which will guide our data collection in the field and which we have selected to define stonecutting. They are: know-how, material, human and form.

La Route de la Pierre est une expédition à but scientifique, technique et social. Ses objectifs regroupent l'étude et la pratique des différents aspects de la taille de pierre en Eurasie dans le but d'en transmettre une représentation actuelle et globale. Le schéma de notre étude présente donc les 4 thèmes principaux qui guideront notre collecte de données sur le terrain et que l'on a sélectionné pour définir la taille de pierre. Ils regroupent donc : les savoirs-faire, la matière, l'humain et la forme.
The themes of the study
The itinerary is divided into five parts, over five years. The idea is to experiment on the spot and gather information. The route follows the major axes of the Silk Roads, littered with stone architectural treasures. Each year a return to France is planned in order to progress with the team and our partners on the study and the field analysis.
